Proof of Delivery (POD) is the official record that the carrier delivered the goods to the intended recipient and that the recipient accepted them, often noting the condition and any delivery specifics. This confirmation is what triggers payment and settlement, since many shipments rely on proof that the recipient received and accepted the cargo before funds are released or charges finalized. POD also provides a concrete point in time for the delivery, helps resolve any discrepancies about what arrived, and can document any notes about damage, shortages, or exceptions for later liability decisions.

The other documents serve different roles. An invoice is a bill for carrier services, not proof that the delivery happened or was accepted. A Bill of Lading is the contract of carriage and act of loading, outlining responsibilities and ownership but not the formal acceptance of goods by the recipient. A cargo insurance certificate shows insured coverage for the shipment, not whether the goods were delivered or accepted.
